In insurance, excess refers to the portion of a claim that is paid by the policyholder before the insurer contributes toward the loss. Put simply, it is the amount you bear yourself when a claim occurs. For example, if your excess is KES 20,000 and your claim is KES 100,000, you pay the first KES 20,000 and the insurer covers the remaining KES 80,000.
Third Party Only (TPO) insurance covers liabilities arising from a claim made against you by a third party as a result of an accident that was blamed on you. This includes both material damage (damage to someone else's property or vehicle) and bodily injury (injuries sustained by other people). TPO is the minimum legal requirement for motor insurance in Kenya, but does not cover damage to your own vehicle.
PVT stands for Political Violence and Terrorism cover. This is an additional benefit that protects your vehicle should a loss occur due to political violence or acts of terrorism. We strongly recommend having this benefit, especially during political years or periods of civil unrest, as standard motor policies typically exclude such events.
Yes, for comprehensive motor insurance, your vehicle needs to be valued within 14 days of picking up the cover. The good news is that the valuation is at our cost—you won't pay a thing. You can choose from our wide range of accredited valuers at your convenience.
